125 flamingo chicks rescued in Kutch |
18 January 2018 |
Every year, flamingos arrive in Greater Rann of Kutch at the onset of winter to breed. However, this year they left behind a few chicks which had got trapped in the mud and cold water in one of the breeding nests. Fortunately for around 125 chicks, they were spotted by forest rangers who rescued them. The birds fly into the region around October-November every year.
Anda Bet in Kutch is considered among the favourite destinations of these birds. Recently, they also started building nests near Rapar which were discovered by a few forest rangers. V D Goswami and R R Parmar of Rapar North forest range were visiting a place near Kuda village, some eight km from BSF chowki, when they found flamingo chicks trapped in marshy mud pans, freezing in cold waters. The chicks were about a month old, said M G Chauhan, North Range forest officer of Rapar. Flamingoes usually leave by January with their young ones. This time a few of the chicks got stuck in the muddy water and could not leave the nest.
