Kutch is in the process of cementing its place in India’s cement manufacturing industry. Two talukas of Gujarat’s border district Abdadsa and Lakhpat will have as many as four big cement manufacturing plants in the next two-three years. Four companies — Deepak Cements & Chemicals, Gujarat Anjan Cement, ABG Group and Sanghi Industries —are going to sign MoUs worth Rs 3,300 crore during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit 2007.
Good availability of limestone in the region as well as proximity to the sea are major reasons why cement companies have made a beeline before the district. Almost all companies are in the process of constructing jetties in the Gulf of Kutch for exporting cement. A senior government official told ET that the four companies are likely to sign MoUs during the investors’ summit. Deepak Cement & Chemicals, which has tied up with Dubai’s ETA Ascon Group, is setting up a 3.8 mtpa cement plant in two phases at the capital outlay of Rs 1,300 crore.
