Bidada Sarvodaya Trust Hospital

A Brief Introduction

The injured, homeless victims of the kutch earthquake have a ray of hope in the shree bidada Sarvodaya trust. This charitable organization has a history of 27 years of humaintarian work In kutch district in gujarat.

The trust has a permanent 50-bed eye, dental, medical and gyneocology hospital at bidada where approximately 300 patients receive treatment everyday on an out-patient basis and 5 to 10 patients are admitted for surgery. This trust has a deep understanding of the people of this area and a history of successfully treating more than 1.8 million people from this region, free of cost, over years.

In the shocking aftermath of the quake, shree bidada sarvodaya trust, operating at bidada village in mandvi taluka, approximately 50 kms. Away from bhuj, has cared for thousands of injured victims, carrying out successful surgeries and rehabilitation. The hospitals at bhuj, bhachau, anjar and other towns in kutch were completely levelled by the earthquake. The hospital at bidada was one of the only two hospitals without any damage and fully functional with three operating theaters and was able to treat patients sent to them from all over kutch. They received lot of patients from army hospital in bhuj for complicated surgeries.

A team of 87 doctors and nurses was put together promptly andflown to bidada on january, 27th. A chartered flight was arranged for this purpose. More arrived in the next couple of days by road. These doctors worked 18-hours days for the first three weeks there. Thereafter, this team of doctors was replaced, and is being continuously replaced, by small teams on a rotational basis. In addition to the teams of doctors
From all over india, bidada hospital had doctors from other countries, including a team of doctors from oman.

From 27th january to 30th april 2001, a total of 23,331 patients were attended to free of charge.

Around 50 doctors and volunteers from the u.s. as well as 200 doctors and volunteers from bombay treated more than 18,000 patients during this camp. As a matter of coincidence, The january 2001 camp that started on january 5, had just ended on january 24 - just two days before the killer earthquake of the 26th january and everything at the hospital was in place to handle the emergency created
by the quake.

U.S. consul in bombay is attending the annual medical camp as our chief guest on a regular basis since
1990. On the 25th anniversary of the medical camp at bidada, U. S. ambassador to India, Hon. Richard F. Celeste, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Ever quarter, bidada hospital holds a mini-camp in 2 to 4 faculities organised in bidada by the trust. These mini-camps provide opportunities for the villagers to receive medical help and follow-up care throughout the year.

The trust also runs maru hospital, a charitable hospital in bombay. Maru hospital provides affordable health services in 20 medical faculities to those in need. 300 parients are attended to here every day. Maru hospital is the only charitable center in Bombay that provides retina surgeries.

On any given day of the year, there are at least 10-15 patients in major hsopitals throughout bombay who are being taken care of by the trustees and volunteers of bidada sarvodaya trust.
